On June 4, the Illinois Conservation Foundation joined the Dana-Thomas House Foundation, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and community partners in celebrating a meaningful investment in one of Illinois’ most iconic historic landmarks.
At a check presentation event held at the Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, the Dana-Thomas House Foundation presented a $48,874 donation to the Illinois Conservation Foundation to support the purchase and installation of historically appropriate rugs throughout the home. The Dana-Thomas House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1902, is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and remains one of the most complete early examples of Prairie-style architecture.
The donation will fund the replacement of worn and frayed carpets with designs that honor Wright’s original vision for the space. The Illinois Conservation Foundation will serve as fiscal agent for the project, ensuring that the funds are used in full accordance with the donor’s intent.
“This project is a powerful example of what’s possible when passionate donors and public agencies work together,” said Jenny Vaughn, Executive Director of the Illinois Conservation Foundation. “We’re proud to help ensure that donor intent is honored and that places like the Dana-Thomas House remain protected and accessible for generations to come.”
Director Natalie Phelps Finnie of IDNR also reflected on the value of preserving spaces like this:
“The Dana-Thomas House is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a vital piece of our state's cultural heritage. Preserving historic sites like this ensures future generations can learn from and experience Illinois’ rich history.”
Tom Ryder, President of the Dana-Thomas House Foundation, spoke on behalf of the Foundation:
“The Foundation’s mission over its 40+ year history has been to support, promote, and protect the Dana-Thomas House. Thanks to our members for their donations, and the sponsors and attendees at our events, we are pleased to be able to provide the funds needed to replace worn and frayed carpets in the House.”
This restoration effort reflects the strength of public-private partnerships in protecting Illinois’ historic treasures. The Illinois Conservation Foundation is honored to work with donors and agencies across the state to safeguard places that connect us to our past and inspire future generations.
